Locations of Alleged Discrimination and Harassment (2022-23)

The Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination (OPHD) collects information about the locations of reported incidents. Even conduct occurring off University property may be in scope for the policies OPHD oversees if the incidents alleged were committed by or against University affiliates or have continuing adverse effects on affiliates.

As illustrated in Figure 6, reports of discrimination and harassment which come into OPHD are associated with a variety of locations. 43% of incidents alleged to OPHD occurred on campus. (The category of “campus” includes property owned and controlled by the university, including on-campus buildings, residence halls, and University Village in Albany.) 14.5% of reports alleged incidents occurring online, a figure that has steadily risen over the years. A much smaller percentage (13.6%) of reports allege incidents occurring off campus. A quarter of reports did not have a specified location (“Other/Unknown” location). The “Affiliated/Non-Campus” category (3.4%) includes housing that is not owned by the university, even if occupied by a high number of students. This includes fraternities, sororities, and cooperative (co-op) housing.

Reports could have named multiple locations. In order to more clearly illustrate the locations of alleged incidents, Figure 6 excludes “unknown” and “no basis” reports.
